The US Air Force now need more pilots for drones than it does for any particular conventional airplane. It may still need more pilots to fly from cockpits than from consoles, but at least per airplane type, drones are in demand. The trend has grown from a few pilots remotely flying unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance, to weaponized drones for special missions, to drones being in greater demand than of the USAF’s fighters. Two consequences to note are the increased automation of warfare, and the increased probability that a pilot will be trained in skills that aren’t as applicable after they leave the force.
