“scientists have now identified two specific cortex regions that they believe could be essential to human consciousness” – World Economic Forum

By studying about three dozen patients who experienced similar damage but had different responses, scientists were able to identify two places in the brain that seem to make the difference between being conscious and being in a coma. The study hasn’t been independently verified, yet; but it suggests consciousness is tied to specific biological constructs. The article doesn’t mention whether any animals have similar cortex regions. In the meantime, there is a benefit regardless of independent verification.
