Artificial Intelligence is being used to create new codes, new ways to encrypt messages. Cryptography has been essential for secure communications across the Internet. Most people only rely on it for financial transactions, but privacy is an issue, too. More powerful computers mean brute force can decode some messages; so, there’s interest in more powerful codes. AI is now generating codes without human intervention. That means humans have a rougher time guessing how to break the code. A recent test used one AI to break another AI’s code. The code worked. The encryption held. If implemented, we will have given AI that much more control over one of our most vital systems. Yet another task shifts from humans to automation. But we’ll probably have great privacy.
