Two articles and series of interviews reflect aspects of The American Dream and conventional wisdom. While politicians and pundits talk about the ideology of the American Dream, large segments of the population are finding that hard work and honesty no longer produce real manifestations of that dream. Instead, people are striving for basic survival, and being satisfied if they achieve it; or are finding that they must find measures that are personal, non-monetary, and frequently unconventional. This is despite the typical American working more hours than counterparts in other countries (~ 137 hours per year), with lower benefits (like paid sick leave or maternity leave), and lower wages.
