Most hacks are against software. Software is complicated and fragile because it is nothing but information. A hacker just has to be persistent about finding the imperfections. The good news is that defenses and patches are possible. Hardware is also complicated, but it is considered permanent, relatively. If it is secure when it leaves the factory, it remains secure – except that it isn’t. It takes more effort, but hackers found a way to hack the hardware. The good news is that the hack is difficult and limited. The bad news is, some hacks can affect many more computers and types of machines because chips are so ubiquitous. The other bad news is, this is about the hack we know about. Are there other hacks out there that are stronger and more pervasive, but that we haven’t uncovered?
