In the US, estimates of the growth in car miles, the total number of miles driven each year, have over-estimated the eventual reality. About a decade ago, US drivers hit a limit of about 3,000,000,000,000, three trillion miles. That’s a lot of miles, but the estimates suggested it would be closer to four trillion by now. Eco-consciousness, gas prices, the Great Recession, urbanization, and shifting attitudes mean fewer resources are going to one of the least energy efficient means of transportation. A positive result that resulted from individuals rather than an over-arching policy.
