Self-driving taxis are already becoming available. One trial will begin in Pittsburgh. Much of the news about self-driving vehicles makes it sound like they are only prototypes, but will be available in years. Uber has decided to speed things up by launching them now, but with human supervision. The cabbie will basically be a monitor, only taking control when there’s a problem. The incentives are apparent to transportation companies, and evidently, they aren’t willing to wait for ultimate solutions. So, at least for a while, they’ll be employing people to pick up people – but probably only for a while.
