Physics followers are probably already aware of the existence of the mysterious dark energy and dark matter and that fact that our “normal” matter only makes up 5% of the universe. Dark energy and dark matter are called dark because we can’t see them directly (but we can detect their influence on the shape of the universe, which is a big thing.) Scientists in Hungary may have detected either a fifth fundamental force (after gravity, the strong force, the weak force, and the electromagnetic force). This fifth force may involve dark photons, that may provide our first view into the fundamental reality of the universe, which is a big thing (repeated for emphasis.) While we struggle with technological limitations, basic research may yet again reveal forces that enable dramatic shifts in what we know and how we live. As usual with such discoveries, it may be decades before we truly understand the implications.
