For 107 hours starting with May 7th, Portugal was able to run exclusively on renewable energy: hydro, solar, and wind. Portugal extends a set of recent records set across Europe where Germany, Scotland, Denmark, and Spain are increasingly finding days when fossil fuels aren’t needed for electricity generation. A significant effort is required to eliminate fossil fuels, so those plants will remain in operation for years; but renewables will continue to gain, pollution will be likely to diminish, health should improve, and countries will become less sensitive to oil, gas, and coal production from volatile areas.
