The quadcopter drones that became popular as toys and then camera platforms are now being seen as threats because they’re being used for threatening purposes. If a delivery company develops a drone large enough to carry packages, then a belligerent can make a drone that can deliver a bomb. One activist has already delivered radioactive sand to a government building in Japan to make a statement. One answer, deploy drones that can capture other drones, which is what Japan’s police force is doing. Technology develops into arms races, and drones have entered that dynamic. Evasion, capture, retaliation, attack, defense can translate into a drone war. The benefits and potentials are too great for the drones to be grounded, which means something will be developed to ground the dangerous ones – starting with old technology like nets.
