As if the wildfires in the American West and in Siberia weren’t bad enough, Indonesia has managed to literally ignite something worse. The American and Russian fires were mostly accidental or natural. Indonesia’s are intentional because it is how they clear land for agriculture. Burning forests is bad enough. The forests were growing on peat, which has a higher than normal level of trapped carbon dioxide, which is now being released at a rate that exceeds the US economy. So, that’s worse. And then came the drought. The normal practice of burning forests has been halted annually by rain, not through human intervention. The fires are too big for anything but Nature to put out, and Nature is not cooperating. At least for now, Indonesia will continue to burn.
