Projections of climate change and sea level rise redraw maps of the US coastline. Debates ensue. While many debate, others are dealing with the reality that the effects of climate change have already hit places that were unsustainably developed. Hurricane Sandy hit three years ago. The impact has faded from the news, just a Katrina has, but the residents of Staten Island and outlying regions of Louisiana are already retreating, finding that they can’t return to their houses because it is either too expensive to get insurance or to build. It isn’t being called a refugee or immigrant crisis, but Americans are already moving in response to climate, weather, and exposure to the elements.
