The nuclear accident at Chernobyl was and is horrendous. Millions of people were affected, either directly by relocation (and probable exposure), or indirectly from downwind exposure. Decades later, the cleanup and the evacuations continue. The evacuated zone could be seen as one of the worst places on Earth, and yet, wildlife has returned. Nuclear accidents aside, this is a reminder that human occupation of an area is more threatening to wildlife than what we consider one of our worst accidents. The health of the wildlife is at risk because of the radiation, but prior to the accident, the wildlife wasn’t even present – scared to be around humans. A sad perspective on our ‘normal’ influence.
