On July 14, the US used up its annual production of resources – effectively. If the US could only use what it had within its borders, then at the current rate of consumption, it would run out of its supplies on July 14th and have to import everything for the rest of the year. It doesn’t work that way, but marking the date emphasizes how dependent the US is on the rest of the world, and how unsustainable the US society is. To reduce consumption enough to make it to January 1 again, we’d evidently have to cut back about 50%. Using renewable energy and eating less and buying less stuff take us in that direction.
