China has experimented with genetically modifying human embryos. The first reported trials weren’t encouraging, at least for the process they employed with current technology. The issue is less that they did or didn’t succeed, but that their actions are proof that it is unrealistic to expect to stop all research into a topic that some consider to be highly unethical. There are too many researchers and too many interested parties who are aware that the technology is relatively affordable and easily concealed. These researchers announced their findings. Are other researchers working on genetically modifying human embryos, and not announcing their findings? Given sufficient private funds, it is likely that private research, and possibly development, will proceed regardless of public opinion.
