Now that people know what to look for, they are finding dozens of craters in Siberia. First, they were a mystery. Now, they are recognized as methane eruptions from warming permafrost. The speculation is that the eruptions may also be explosive. No one has witnessed an eruption directly, but locals have experienced tremors and seen light on the horizon. The danger makes the phenomenon harder to study, but aerial surveys are finding precursors. Methane is more dangerous that carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, and it is explosive. The extent, including whether this can happen outside Siberia, is under investigation.
