A sign of fundamental change. As solar and wind become more affordable, and in many places cheaper than power from centralized facilities, utility managers are realizing that they must shift their business models. Decentralized power means less need for large power plants; but, there remains a communal benefit for connecting the various solar panels and wind turbines into a grid. Utility companies are best positioned to provide that service, but they have to manage the old system while finding funding sources to install and maintain the new system. Their realization is a sign of renewable energy’s maturity.
