The good news is that there are “30% fewer suicide attempts among patients who were screened for suicide risk” (Pew Research) and received appropriate care.
The Sad news is that in the US, the suicide rate is up 33% in 2019 over 1999. Some groups (American Indian & Alaska Native females) are up 139%.
In 2020, suicide was the 12th leading cause of death in the US.
The causes are undoubtedly varied and complex, and each case is personal, but in the divisiveness and turmoil of 2022, it is a real reason to be kinder and take better care of ourselves and each other.
