Driveless taxis are leaving the experimental stage and starting regular service, with some restrictions. Driverless taxis are not a mature technology, but they have progressed enough to serve a mature population. Rather than submit the taxis to the chaos of a city, the taxis are being used in controlled communities like retirement communities. Retirement communities are reasonable entry environments because they are privately controlled, have well-defined restrictions, deal with a subset of the population (fewer children running around), and are self-contained. The population appreciates them because there may be fewer time pressures, some residents have difficulty driving, and the destinations are limited. This is a flip on the traditional introduction of technology which usually assumes that newer is better marketed to younger. Regardless of which demographic is served, the technology is no longer limited to the lab or demos.
