Researchers may have found a way to reverse aging, not just delay it. Some cells become dormant because of damage to their DNA. The longer we live, the more likely this is to happen. Those cells can accumulate and increasingly interfere with healthy bodily functions. Experiments with mice were conducted to uncover the effects of removing the dormant cells.
“their fur regrew, kidney function improved and they were able to run twice as far as untreated elderly animals” – The Guardian
Human trials are planned. It will be an interesting balancing act to: 1) quantify the benefits, if any, versus 2) uncovering the side effects, if any. If the substance works with acceptable side effects (if any), then treating age-related diseases may involve treating aging instead of the diseases, a radical shift in health care.
