Gallup’s “Good Jobs Employment” measure hit a six year high of 47.1% in July. The number of employees working more than 30 hours a week at the same job has increased. Whether they like it or not is a different issue, but “good” here means a job that isn’t part-time or self-employed. More people are getting more substantial work as unemployment is down to 5.1%. The job participation rate is up but only from 67.5% to 67.8%. In general, things are getting better. For those who want but don’t have good jobs or are unemployed, the improvement isn’t happening quickly enough, but the trends are in the right direction.

Good news, indeed. I hope the business journalists will sit up and pay attention and quit proliferating gloom and doom!
