Just like with the drones in war zones that were redesigned to be central to drone warfare, the robots being designed to aid police and security patrols are being weaponized. In some cases, it is improvisational, like the robot in Dallas that was meant to help defuse bombs that was turned into a bomb-delivery robot to kill the Dallas sniper. In other cases, particularly outside the US, robots are being designed to fight so police are kept safe. The same logic was used for the drone warfare, limit the risk to the soldiers while accomplishing the same mission – frequently for less money. Trends can move smoothly, and so slowly that they make progress without being noticed. The trend isn’t always towards lethality, because robots are also being built to bring aid. At least within some places in the world, the remote controlled police force is already here.
