The phrase “Robots are coming to take our jobs” is an over-simplification. Some jobs will be more vulnerable than others. Repetitive manufacturing jobs have already succumbed to robotics. Autonomous vehicles are threatening trucking and taxi jobs. Up to 47% of jobs are considered at high risk of automation: those already described, plus logistics, administration, telemarketing, tax preparation, title searches, and insurers. Another 19% are at medium risk leaving only about 33% of jobs at low risk. The safest jobs are ones that emphasize creativity and human communications. If even a small number of the medium and high risk jobs are lost to machines, unemployment could dramatically increase.
