Among those most worried about climate change, government action has been far too slow – and may already be too late. The Paris climate talks are encouraging, and yet are susceptible to political realities. Government commitments can be fickle because they can shift with elections and budgets. The private sector gets around some of those issues, but it hasn’t been enough – possibly until now. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg and others are creating the Breakthrough Energy Coalition to act where others haven’t been able to. Through new technologies they hope to benefit the majority of the population, limit climate change, and create an environment that enables advances in social change like education and health care. Wait long enough and someone stands up to take on the big tasks, but is it also too little too late?
