The American Dream was based on honest hard work enabling a rising standard of living, and that it was available to everyone. For many, the American Dream has become to merely keep from sliding into poverty. 92% favor financial security over an expectation of getting ahead.
Another 2013 poll found that by an almost two-to-one margin (64 to 33 percent), Americans agreed that “the U.S. no longer offers an equal chance to get ahead.”

The lowered expectations are being reflected in reduced interest in homeownership, marriage, children, education, or entrepreneurship – all basic components of the Dream from fifty years ago.
