NASA’s announcement of water on Mars was met with great celebrations by some and no surprise by others.Such is the nature of deliberate discoveries, discoveries made after years of careful progress made in public. Make the announcement ten years earlier and there’d probably be more cheers because the discovery is significant. For many years it was commonly accepted that Earth was the only planet with water and therefore the only planet with life and the only planet that could be inhabited. As explorations made discoveries from the deep oceans to Pluto, it has become apparent that water is more common than we expected, and that life can survive in more environments than we expected. Also, as exoplanets are being discovered, it is becoming more apparent that the universe may be more habitable than we expected. All are recent changes that encourage further exploration, and increase the likelihood of discovering other life in the universe.
