In recent years, the number of Americans who feel threatened by their government has increased from about 30% in 2003 to 49% in 2015. The increase largely comes from Republicans who dramatically became more worried after 2008, while Democrats became less worried. The two changes do not balance, however, which is why the inclusive average rose.
