One source for optimism is the impressive efforts people make to rectify past human threats. Land mines kill long after wars are over. Decades of wars left 171,000 land mines in Mozambique. It took decades (22 years) to remove them. Unfortunately, 10,900 Mozambicans were killed or injured in the meantime. Now, it is possible to rebuild, replant, and relax. Sadly, there are 60 other countries where land mines continue to kill a total of about 4,000 people every year.
