Costa Rica just broke its own record for operating without fossil fuels – at least for electricity production. Thanks primarily to hydro and geothermal power, the country just went 94 days without having to burn fossil fuels for electricity. Their goal is to be carbon neutral by 2021. They’re making good progress. To get to carbon neutral, though, they’ll have to rely on reforestation and other carbon remediation techniques because electricity production is only part of the energy use. Transportation is a major contributor.
