California and the American Southwest are in drought, which sounds bad, is bad, and would seem to be a detriment to growth. And yet, seven of the ten fastest growing counties are in drought. We’re moving towards, rather than away from, drought. There is a temporary disconnect between economic sustainability and biological sustainability. Which will be temporary; the drought or the local economies? Many people, whether through ignorance or choice, are betting on the drought ending soon even though there is no evidence to suggest either outcome as more likely.
