One path out of poverty in the US has been entrepreneurship. Start a business, work hard, be your own boss. It has also been a much more effective than a paycheck job at reaching millionaire status. Unfortunately, income and wealth inequality, exacerbated by tightened lending have resulted in a decrease in the number of people starting new businesses, and the businesses they start are more prone to the traditional hurdle of being undercapitalized. One more avenue out of poverty has fewer people traveling it, about one million fewer.
