Despite the debates about artificial intelligence, the potential, the technical aspects, the ethics, there is a significant amount of work being done – not all of which is public. AI is powerful enough that people who don’t care about the ethics, who recognize how it could benefit them, and who have the resources are probably already trying to develop generational leaps in AI. There’s no way to detect them. Public debate may be trumped by private progress.
