Many have come to realize that the two words, ‘plastic’ and ‘disposable’ shouldn’t be used together. Baggies, utensils, coffee cups, are cluttering landfills and filling oceans. Surprisingly, few think about the acres of plastic used in farming. Even organic farmers make the trade off between single-use plastic for weed control and irrigation versus pesticides and wasting water. The simplest alternative so far is to use more, rather than less, plastic so it becomes more than single-use. Recyclers are arising, but they must deal with issues of dirt and pesticide contamination. Making farming green again means making unconventional choices about high-tech materials.
