The Internet relies on the major telecommunication companies to provide the infrastructure: cables, hubs, switches, power, etc. The logic behind it, though, was designed with a broken system in mind. Eventually the Internet will break. Meshnets can fill the gaps, and only need smartphones, but some key hardware and software components can make the transition happen much more quickly. Just like having extra batteries for the flashlight, have the right meshnet components in place for the next interruption in service, whether that is local, regional, or global.
