Quantum computing is advancing quickly enough that Google is warning of the need to prepare for a key milestone called Q Day.

Roughly, as of Q Day, “quantum computers can break public-key cryptography algorithms”. That might sound worrisome enough for people worried about real-time computer security because privacy can no longer be assured with conventional protections, but it also threatens existing records that are considered secure now. As of Q Day, records from any old computer records or files may become accessible: health records, financial records, old supposedly secret social media posts, government secrets, et al.

There are years to prepare, but humans are known for taking time to become aware of an issue, and budgetary cycles can mean years of working past bureaucratic hurdles. Q Day is projected to happen in 2029.
