August 1, 2024, Earth Overshoot Day. Last year it was August 2, 2023. We’re trending the wrong way. It is one measure of the unsustainability of our civilization. It is the day by which we’ve used up one year of the Earth’s replenishable resources. Prior to the Industrial Revolution we didn’t use an entire year’s worth of resources in a year, hence, we were more sustainable. That is no longer the case. Now, we’ve used up that much by mid-summer. By that measure, our civilization is not sustainable.
