Sigh. Here we are, again. Here we are, still. Earth Overshoot Day for 2023 is August 2. For the rest of the year we’re using more than the Earth can sustain. That is a generalized statement. Some things are sustainable. We aren’t using up every resource, but enough of them to be worrisome. Ideally, Earth Overshoot Day would be after December 31; i.e. we didn’t use up more than the Earth can sustainably provide. December 31 would mean we were balanced on the edge of sustainability. The date had slid to summer. Not a good sign. There is a good sign, however. Looked at graphically, the date’s slide may have slowed. Let’s look forward to its return to winter.
