“Work hard and get yourself out of poverty” is an old adage, but not a current reality. Of the approximately one in seven Americans in poverty, 63% of them are working. Student debt, health care, housing, transportation, day care expenses, and taxes are largely non-negotiable which means the poor stay poor even though they are doing whatever they can.
