Worried about inflation going up or down a full percent? It is easy to think that it always moves so slowly. In the US, many people can remember the double digit inflation of the Carter/Reagan era. Hyper-inflation happens, and happens more often than we realize. Zimbabwe just experienced 500 billion percent inflation. That’s 500,000,000,000%. Economies and currencies can collapse in a big way. Zimbabwe’s response has been to abandon their currency and use a more stable currency, US Dollars. US Dollars are more stable, but nothing is eternal and guaranteed. And yet, it is an acknowledgement of the US economy that it was the US Dollar, and not a currency out of Asia or Europe, that was seen as safe.
