Black silicon solar cells reached a new record in efficiency by adding nanotubes to the surface. The new record, 22%. In addition to the peak efficiency, the new design allows more light to reach the photovoltaic surface even when the sun is not in the peak position. The falloff with sun angle is one reason northern latitudes can’t use solar as efficiently. This design reduces that effect. The map of places where solar can work more effectively has grown. The size required to power places in lower latitudes has shrunk. The solar surge continues.
