No country has proven itself to be eternal. Democracies and republics are not invulnerable. They are filled with great potential, but the concept continues to mature. Modern governments can benefit from historic lessons. The US can read warning signs from the fall of the Roman Empire; but, will it read them too late? Or, are things really different this time? Dysfunctional politics, an evaporating middle class, and war are too familiar and may have the same consequences.
