The drought in California and the American Southwest is illustrated with contrasting photos of reservoirs filled now emptied, lawns green now brown, and farms busy now fallow. The drought hits hardest, though, where water was already in short supply, in the desert, where the reservations were established. There, cutbacks are not just a matter of livelihoods but lives. Even rain may not help if it comes too quickly. The situation is dire, with few solutions except long, slow, gentle rains which are uncommon. Communities wonder what to do. No easy answers are found.
