An autonomous car just drove across the United States, and it wasn’t a Google or Tesla product. Delphi, a large old name in the auto industry just tested an autonomous vehicle by driving it from coast to coast. For about 1% of the time, a human driver took over if the risk of failure was too high; e.g. construction sites, etc. This is remarkable progress considering the recent introduction of the technology. Even if autonomous vehicles were only used on interstate highways, there would be significant incentive to automate significant portions of the long-distance traffic. Trucking would change. The vehicles are already working in cities. Taxis could change. The change is happening rapidly and quietly.
