When machines replaced humans, humans shifted to more specialized tasks because there was more work to be done. When robots first replaced humans it was in the factory, increasing repeatability, increasing safety, and of course decreasing costs. Some workers were retrained. Many were not. Industrialized society is now more about logistics and information. Autonomous vehicles mean less need for drivers. Artificial intelligence is getting better at mundane, repetitive office tasks. Does the retraining continue forever, or are workers asked to leave the work field?
