Siberia is a big place. So amazingly big that big doesn’t describe it. So, when someone was surprised to find a massive crater it was by luck, not intent. We don’t know what caused the crater, but meteorites have been ruled out. One major suspect is methane. As permafrost thaws trapped methane rapidly becomes a gas, expanding to hundreds of times its liquid or solid volume. Pop goes the planet. Now that one has been found, dozens more are either popping up, or simply being discovered. No one noticed because no one is there, but magnitude isn’t determined by our habitation. This could be a big thing. Methane is far worse for climate change than carbon dioxide.
