The general cry is for better cybersecurity, Defending against threats has been a constant element of human existence. Originally, pointed sticks and a campfire kept danger at bay. Then, our walls grew, grew moats, and encompassed cities. Eventually though, weapons became unstoppable and the strategy became “a good defense is a strong offense.” The same trend is happening in the cyberwars. Defenses are necessary. It still makes sense to build strong houses with lockable doors. But, it is also cost efficient for large organizations to arm themselves with more powerful weapons. The US has a Manhattan Project for the cyberwars, that is necessarily secret and necessarily offensive. The difference in the cyberwars is that, when a weapon strikes a target we are unlikely to notice. Even the target may not know where the attack came from. Cyberwars look like they are trending towards powerful anonymous attacks against target defenses that can’t keep up. It’s going to get messy out there.
