Localvores have good reason to cheer small, local farmers. Eating local, seasonal, and organic food is good for people and the planet. It is not, however a good business for most farmers. Business still relies on the direct balance of income and expense. The benefits to society are marvelous, but with the current model, the farmer has to farm more for the intangible benefits. Small scale farming, as desirable as it is, has never been very profitable (except for certain cash crops like marijuana, but that’s another story.)
