Robots are entering our lives, but in ways we hadn’t expected. That’s the way the future has always worked. As robots in hardware and software control more of our lives they affect others more frequently. If they affect others inappropriately, and illegally, who gets the blame? Who goes to jail? You may not expect your Roomba to go on a rampage, randomly vacuuming the neighbors’ houses, but if your autonomous car hits someone is the responsible party you, the manufacturer, the programmer, or the sales person? If your software bot clicks on the wrong link, can you prove it was the computer and not you? If we always point at the computer, then some will hide behind them to do what would otherwise produce a prison sentence.
