It turns out that those landfills and tire dumps that were pollution intense and ugly to see also can be turned into something useful. Our garbage was our waste. Waste from inefficiency means there is still value in the resources that haven’t been tapped. We are beginning to mine our decades of discards. Even tire dumps, which seemed to be the most difficult things to hide or reuse, are now down 92%. It turns out burning tires can power cement factories. Ground up tires can become pavement. What other garbage will become something useful? There’s more gold in a cell phone than in an equal amount of average ore. Dumpster diving on an industrial scale may eat out landfills.
