The Great Plastic Pacific Gyre has been common knowledge for years. It is not alone. All of the oceans contain plastic, more than 260,000 tons of it. This is not good. There is a mystery though. The smallest pieces are the hardest to detect. We don’t know where they’re going. Are they being mistaken for food and therefore piling up inside the bodies of fish? Are they settling out even when larger pieces aren’t? Are they actually degrading down to insignificance? The implications for the small particles are large.
